An expository essay is one in which the writer simply describes or explains a subject, a concept, or a process. Unlike other types of essays, the writer is not supposed to inject his/her opinion, and there is absolutely no need to pick a point of view.

The descriptive essay is an essay in which the student uses descriptive and evocative language to describe a subject. The most effective essays of this type concentrate on utilizing verbiage that is related to the five senses.

What is a definition essay? It is simply an essay that explores the meaning of a word, or in some cases, a phrase. Of course, in order to complete an entire essay, you have to select a word that warrants some exploration and investigation.

The task of writing a compare and contrast essay can be quite challenging. First of all, this form of essay actually encompasses three different essay subtypes.

An argumentative essay is a written work in which the writer takes a controversial topic, chooses a position on that topic, and then writes an essay supporting that position.

An analytical essay is an essay in which the writer analyzes a subject and presents his or her opinions on that subject using facts as a basis for those opinions. Frequently, analytical essays are based on other written works.

There are many different types of essays - argumentative, descriptive, persuasive, narrative, compare/contrast, and more. The five paragraph essay, on the other hand, is not an essay type.
