History Research Paper
Good History Research Paper Topics Depend on You
A lot of students dislike history and take the bare minimum requirement to fulfill credit requirements. It’s rather sad that this is the case, but often the dislike stems from the way these courses are taught. The textbooks are rather dry and boring, and often the teachers are as well. They love history and somehow think that everyone else should love it enough that they are captivated by the constant class lectures, essays and papers. Students who are motivated by grades will take good notes and study for tests, but will seldom remember much of what they were taught once that final exam is over. One way a student can stimulate a bit of interest is to choose history research paper topics that relate to other interests s/he has or to strong opinions s/he holds. Choosing these types of topics can make the “pain” of the whole process at least a bit more bearable.
History Topics That Might Stimulate Interest
Do you have some deep opinions about some of the political, economic, or social issues that we face today? Addressing them from a historical perspective could be enlightening and interesting.
- The Separation of Church and State is clearly provided for in our Constitution, yet early state and federal governments supported Protestant Christianity in word and deed. What impact did the newer immigrants of the late 19th and early 20th centuries (Catholics, Jews, and several Oriental sects) have on the separation of church and state? What arguments still exist relative to this issue today?
- The belief that America has the best political and economic systems in the world has led to periods in which we have attempted to impose our values on other people (Interventions into the internal affairs of other countries) and sometimes to behave badly (annihilation of Native American populations). Research one or two of these events from the time period you are currently studying.
- Discrimination and racism has always existed in America. In addition to the obvious discrimination against African-Americans, what other groups have been victims at different times in American history?
- During what times in American history has income inequality not been a major issue? Why?
- Anti-Semitism has existed since the beginnings of Christianity. Other than the obvious horrific events of the Holocaust, where and when has anti-Semitism “reared its ugly head?”
- How has music reflected social issues throughout our history?
- The Civil War was fought to determine once and for all the supremacy of the federal government over state governments. Research some events since 1865 that have brought this conflict to the forefront again.
- Some historical researchers state that all of history is a pendulum swing between man’s desire for security and his desire for freedom. Trace the major periods of history with this hypothesis in mind. Is it valid?
- Two major factors have been the cause of conflict and war in the Middle East since the end of World War II – the increasing need for oil on the part of industrialized nations and the establishment of the country of Israel. Choose one of these factors and trace its contribution to the continued unrest.
- Trace the history of U.S.-Cuban relations.
- England and France responded very differently to the independence movements/revolutions within their colonial empires in the 20th century. How did those two difference approaches impact the political and economic conditions of these newly independent countries?
- What ancient societies contributed to the principles of democracy and what were those specific contributions?
- How have machines and improved production impacted society in both positive and negative ways? Will continued advances in technology have the same impacts?
Within this list, there are many other topics that are implied, and students should be able to find a topic or two that they would be interested in researching. Of course, other students may discover that their interest in history remains negligible. For these students, as well as others for whom a history research paper is just not feasible, another option is to use a research paper writing service that has history research and writing experts who have a passion for the subject and who can produce original scholarly papers for students in need.
